지금, 사라지지 않는 Contemporary Classics

동시대 미술에서 ‘지금’은 새로움의 속도로 오해되곤 한다. 하지만 현재는 언제나 축적된 기억과 물질 위에서 형성된다. 이 전시는 시간의 소모에 쉽게 닳지 않는 작업들을 본다. 지금 만들어지지만 오래된 질문을 품은 회화와 조각이다.

신선주의 회화는 대상을 설명하지 않는다. 화면 속 사물과 표면은 서사를 전달하기보다 사건 이후에 남겨진 상태로 존재한다. 불에 그을린 목재, 손상된 구조, 바랜 색조는 재현의 대상이 아니라 시간의 흔적이다. 회화와 사진의 경계에서 출발한 작업은 점차 대상의 외형보다 공간의 온도와 빛, 공기의 밀도로 나아간다. 보이는 것 너머에 남은 감각을 화면에 정착시킨다.

김나리의 조각은 인간 형상을 통해 존재의 근원을 탐색한다. 그의 얼굴들은 특정 인물을 가리키지 않으며 감정을 직접 드러내지도 않는다. 인간과 자연, 생과 사, 기억과 침묵이 겹쳐진 보편 존재의 상징에 가깝다. 반복 배치된 얼굴들은 개별 조각이 아니라 서로를 비추며 하나의 숲을 이룬다. 슬픔과 치유, 상처와 연민이 함께 머무는 공간이다.

두 작업은 공통점을 지닌다. 사건 이후 남은 것, 말로 환원되지 않는 상태, 시간이 형성한 물질과 형상에 대한 집중이다. 신선주의 회화가 사물에 남은 시간을 응시한다면, 김나리의 조각은 존재에 남은 시간을 마주한다. 두 작업 모두 즉각적 해석보다 머무는 시선과 반복되는 관람 속에서 드러난다.

Contemporary Classics.

이 전시는 과거의 양식을 호출하지 않는다. 동시대 안에서 이미 고전의 조건을 갖춘 작업, 시간 속에서도 의미가 소멸되지 않을 작업을 제시한다. 지금, 사라지지 않는 것들에 대한 기록이다


In contemporary art, the notion of the “present” is often equated with immediacy and novelty. Yet historically, the present has always been shaped by what precedes it—by accumulated memory, material, and experience. This exhibition focuses on works that resist rapid consumption, works created in the present yet grounded in questions that persist over time.

Shinseonju’s paintings do not function as descriptive representations. The objects and surfaces within his canvases appear as residual states—conditions left in the aftermath of events rather than elements of narrative. Charred wood, damaged structures, and muted tonalities are treated not as motifs, but as material evidence of time. Originating at the intersection of painting and photography, his practice increasingly shifts from outward appearance toward atmospheric qualities: temperature, light, and spatial density. What emerges is a painterly articulation of sensations that remain beyond direct visibility.

Kim Nari’s sculptures engage the human form as a site of existential inquiry. Her faces are not portraits, nor do they offer explicit emotional cues. Instead, they operate symbolically, merging references to humanity and nature, life and death, memory and silence. Through repetition and spatial arrangement, the works move beyond singular objects to form a collective presence—an environment that invites quiet reflection rather than immediate interpretation.

Though distinct in medium, the two practices converge in their attention to what endures after events have passed: states that resist verbalization, and forms shaped through the passage of time. Where Shinseonju’s paintings attend to temporality embedded in objects, Kim Nari’s sculptures address temporality embedded in existence itself. In both cases, meaning unfolds through sustained looking and repeated engagement.

Contemporary Classics.

This exhibition does not reference historical styles as quotation. Rather, it proposes works that already possess a classical condition within the contemporary—works whose significance remains intact beyond the moment of their making. It presents a record of what persists, here and now.
